I was raised around people who kept knowledge that was never written in schoolbooks. It was passed down through work — through watching careful people do careful things, season after season, without fanfare and without a product catalog. That is where most of what I know came from.

The methods I use are not mine. They belong to a way of living that valued self-reliance over convenience, and permanence over ease. I have worked that way my whole life. What I have learned is that most of what a household needs to run well costs almost nothing — if you know the right way to approach it.

I share these things because I believe most families are capable of far more than the modern world gives them credit for. You do not need to live the way I live to use any of this. You only need to be willing to try the old way once.
